Route 3: Pokemon Gyms

Good morning, night, or mid-day to you. Welcome to Route 3. With the dream of being the very best, we approach a very important location: the Pokemon Gym. Don't worry! We aren't asking you to run or lift weights (however running these battles while being unprepared is something you might wish you could do). In each region, there are eight gym badges to acquire. Here in the Pokemon Gym, your main objective is to beat all required trainers and complete any puzzles before you are allowed to challenge the big boss Gym Leader.

Every gym has a specialized typing. You might ask, "What gives a gym their typing?" An easy answer is that the gym revolves around its Gym Leader. If the leader's Pokemon has any of the 18 types as a theme, the gym will also follow. For the example, I will be mentioning the Kanto region (Generation I) and its gyms

The first gym leader is Brock, The Rock-Solid Pokemon Trainer. He specializes in Rock-type Pokemon. In his gym, you face a trainer who also specializes in the same type. After defeating him, you are able to face the leader, Brock. Once you are able to defeat him, he will grant you the Boulder Badge, as well as a Technical Machine (TM) which are moves you can give Pokemon. However, if you come unprepared and lose, you will be rushed to the Pokemon Center to heal your Pokemon and will have to try again.

With your first badge, you will be able to progress the story as well as challenge the other gyms. Each gym will be scaled to the level expected for your Pokemon to be. For example, the first gym in the Kanto region has its highest level Pokemon being Level 14 while the eighth gym has its highest Pokemon being Level 50!

As I mentioned before, most gym has some kind of puzzle. The puzzle usually has some kind of reference to the design and the typing the gym specializes in. One example is the Psychic-type Pokemon Gym. The gym was in a three-by-three layout with teleporters in every room. Each teleporter connected to another teleporter. You need to find your way from the main lobby to the Gym Leader. I have to admit, I got it through with only 1-2 mistakes to figure it out when I played it for the first time. However, it took me ages to figure out what teleporter was correct to get back. Thankfully in later generations, they have some way to get out easier (would've been nice to have so I didn't have to waste so much time, but hey, I learned how to clear each puzzle efficiently).

That concludes our discussion on Pokémon Gyms for today! Until then, keep on grinding! See you soon!

  1. Hey Gedle, really great job on your blog post. I enjoyed reading your introduction and tutorial on the Pokémon series. Your explanations make it clear and remind me of when I was younger, playing Pokémon on the Nintendo DS. Great use if hyperlinks to back up your information.
