Route 1 (Intro)

"Hello there! Welcome to the world of Pokémon!"

These are the starting words for a generation of gamers. Good morning, night, or mid-day to you. My name is Gedle Gedleh and I am here to share my favorite gaming series with you, Pokémon. If you haven't heard about this series, let me inform you. Pocket Monsters or Pokémon for short is a popular role-playing gaming franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. At its core, Pokémon revolves around a world inhabited by various creatures called Pokémon, each possessing unique abilities and characteristics. Trainers capture, befriend, and train with these creatures with the goal of becoming a Pokémon Master.

There are many Pokémon out there, with 1,010 spanning over nine generations of games and more coming out in the next few weeks with DLC. They come in all shapes and sizes. From 4 inches to 65 feet tall, from 0.2 lbs to 2,204.4 lbs. All are available to capture, some are rarer than the rest. You start each journey with a selection of three starter Pokémon: a water, fire, and grass type. Each with unique design, strength, and moves. As you say goodbye to your mom, your journey to be the best begins.

As much of a passion I have for these games, I must confess I got into them later than it seems. Growing up, I only ever watched some episodes of the show. My first time watching Pokemon was in 2007 with Diamond and Pearl live on Cartoon Network. Just like any lost 5-year-old, I didn't understand what exactly was going on but I knew it was awesome! I never touched the games until a friend of mine in the 6th grade got the NEWEST game, Pokemon X. I tried it for a bit and I was living life. It was the best time I ever had...even though I only ever played the first 5 mins of the game. I didn't own a DS or 3DS so I thought I could never play any of the games. It wasn't until the 10th grade I knew emulation was a thing. Since then, let me say it was a boom. A DS, 2DS, copy of Pokemon X (the first game I played), Pokemon Sapphire (the first Gameboy Advance game I've ever played), played every generation, and own all the games on the Switch. It looks crazy, I know...its just that good.

As excited as I am to talk about everything I know, just like Route 1, we start from the very beginning. In Pokémon, there are currently 18 Pokémon typing. Including the starter fire, water, and grass, there are Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Steel, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, Dark, and Fairy. Typings don't only apply to Pokémon, but to their moves as well. Some are super effective, which give a 2 times boost, and other are not very effective, which does 1/2 damage. Let's look at the basic trio of fire, water, and grass. Fire moves are super effective towards grass types, grass moves are super effective towards water types, and water moves are super effective towards fire types. The reverse for these three is not very effective (fire to water, water to grass, grass to fire).

In the next post, I'll get more into each Pokémon type. Stay tuned!

  1. Hey Gedle! This was so fun and nostalgic to read! You unlocked the deep memories I have of playing Pokemon X and Y with my brother and trying to guess "Who's that Pokemon?!" at every commercial break of the TV show. My brother always beat me at being the best, but maybe after reading more of your blog I can impress him next time we get our hands on the old 3DS's. Great writing!

  2. Hey Gedle, Excellent job reviewing and explaining the game of Pokémon. As a kid, my brothers and I would play the games on the DS. Excellent use of rhetorical moves that show you understand the game, such as the links to different facts about the game. Which allows the reader to trust the facts given. The introduction also serves as a great example of intriguing the reader, especially if he is not a gamer. especially if he is not a gamer.
